Case study · Tech support scam

A pop-up 'refund' that drained a brokerage account

A fake security warning led to remote access, a fake 'overpayment' and wires to a so-called federal agent. The last three wires were caught.

§ 01The brief

The client called a number on a pop-up warning. The 'technician' took remote control of his computer, showed him a fake refund error, then passed him to a 'federal agent' who told him to move his savings to protect them. He sent five wires over two weeks.

§ 02What I did

  1. 1.

Had him disconnect the computer and change passwords from a different device, then call his bank and brokerage with me on the line.

  2. 2.

Requested recalls on all five wires, starting with the most recent, and sent each receiving bank the call log and screenshots.

  3. 3.

Filed the CCS and FAE reports and a local police report.

§ 03The outcome

Three receiving banks returned $410,000. The first two wires had already left the country.
